Americans are choosing bigger homes and lawns are shrinking in order to keep home prices affordable. With land prices almost doubling since 2009, every additional square foot adds to the cost.
Newly constructed homes are now coming with fewer than two feet of yard space for every one foot of finished indoor space, according to Zillow. A decade ago, new homes were surrounded by about three feet of yard for every foot indoors.
